A visit to the DMZ

Our tour, provided by USO, began at the American military Camp Kim in downtown Seoul. A cheery young Korean woman in skinny jean served as our tour guide and pointed out the occasional geographical feature as we made our way north. Near the border, the barbed-wire fences and guard towers became more of a common sight, and eventually we reached a checkpoint where an American soldier came onto the bus to inspect our passports. We were officially in the DMZ.

We take the cable car back down and finally push our way into the glitzy world of high density, freewheeling consumption. As we wade wide-eyed through the multitudes, possibly in circles because we’ve walked by the Innis Free shop at least six times, we start to forget what exactly we’ve come here to buy.
